Newsletter - December 2004

2004 has been a busy year for United, underpinned by two core construction projects which have run throughout, one for Napier city and the other in Hastings.

Reconstruction of Petane / Hill Rd, Bayview

United was awarded the contract to completely upgrade the Bayview village centre giving this close little community a fresh new look to its heart. With the project managed by our intrepid 'Q', United provided new roading, pedestrian paving, stormwater and water mains with minimal interference to the locals (apart from the occasional flooding of the Community Hall). Appreciation from the community was demonstrated with a celebratory evening at "THE PUB" at the conclusion of the contract, definitely a good evening had by all.

Omahu Rd Sewer Rehabilitation / Separation

The Omahu Rd sewer main transports waste for a significant proportion of Hastings industry was found to be collapsing, fortunately the District Council had a programme in to upgrade and separate the waste water system in this area. United initiated the replacement of existing lines through their underground maintenance contract and ultimately ended up winning the contract to perform the separation works as well. Works were made interesting from the fact that Omahu Road was once the Ngaruroro River bed, running shingle is just what you need when working down to 3m deep, NOT!!! However it didn't take long for our Divisional manger Tony Price to take full advantage of this newly discovered quarry. Works have progressed well with the crew on site receiving loads of positive comments on their performance, especially in traffic management from HDC, accuracy in alignment has been pretty good too.

New Plant

2004 has seen United obtain a significant amount of new plant, making a serious dent in hireage of larger plant. Items purchased include 20,13,3.5 and 1.5Tonne diggers, two 400kg plate compactors, two tipulator units and 2 tractor units with bath tubs.

Births / Deaths / Marriages

United has had an unfortunate year with 2 stalwart staff members passing away before their time Noo Te Tonga and Po Pohio both men of significant mana, were hugely respected, and are greatly missed by all.

However things in the births department have been going mad. Noel and Sarah Gray became parents once more (or is that 12th more?) to Ethan, born 7lb 8oz on 28/7/04. Quentin and Rachel Welch became parents to Aidan, born 10lb 4oz on 15/2/04. Aaron Henry and his partner became parents to Teerui Te Aro, born 6lb 12oz on 3/3/04. Steve and Jane Grant became parents to Finn, born 8lb 7oz on 6/1/04.

Owen Garnett and Marise Watkins both became grandparents (not for the first time either) to O'Cyrus and Ty respectively.

Congratulations to the very lucky couple, Roger and Leah Keighley married on 6 Feb '04 with the whole bash covered by local radio station Classic Hits 93FM.

Industry Competitions

Congratulations to our, once again, local drum filling champions Roger Kieghly, Richie Willis and Pete D'Acre taking on all comers at the Excavator Competitions, also to Mike Francis winning the Hynds, Clay Target shooting (it pays not to argue with Mike!!!)
